About this scholarship
The California Chafee Grant provides up to $5,000 per year for up to five years to current and former California foster youth pursuing vocational training or college courses. Foster youth who were in care between ages 16-18 can apply up to age 26 without regard to parental income since they are considered independent students. The 2026-27 application cycle opened October 1, 2025.

Eligibility details
Must be a current or former foster youth who was a ward of the court living in foster care between the ages of 16 and 18. Must not have reached age 26 as of July 1 of the award year. Must be enrolled in an eligible vocational school or college at least half-time. Must be making satisfactory academic progress. Must file a FAFSA or California Dream Act Application.
